The first elected chief under the 1915 charter, Dickinson was a carpenter and garage proprietor who built North Rose's first homemade chemical fire cart by hand.
Robert D. Dickinson, son of Jay R. Dickinson and Elizabeth Bovee, was born on May 6, 1869. He married Emeline Briggs (1870–1964) on March 14, 1888, in North Rose, NY. Robert and Emeline are buried in the Rose Cemetery, Rose, NY.
Robert built a homemade fire truck — a pull cart for dispersing chemicals — as noted within "North Rose 1940" and in the Lake Shore News. The LSN of July 7, 1938, covering a barn fire at the home of Mrs. Ernest Griggs on Gray Street, reported: "The home, 10 feet from the barn was saved by chemicals thrown by Robert Dickinson, aged 70, who used his home-made fire truck…"
Robert was a lifelong resident of North Rose. Throughout his adult life his primary occupations were noted as carpenter and automobile garage proprietor.
